What is USDC? The dollar stablecoin explained

USDC is a stablecoin: a digital token designed to stay worth one US dollar. It is issued by Circle and backed by cash and short-term US government securities held in reserve. Because its value is stable and transfers settle quickly, USDC is widely used for payments, trading and token sales.

How USDC keeps its value

Each USDC in circulation is intended to be redeemable for one US dollar. Circle holds reserves for the full amount and publishes regular attestations about them. Approved businesses can mint new USDC by depositing dollars and redeem USDC to receive dollars, which keeps the market price close to $1.

One coin, many networks

Native USDC is issued on several blockchains, including Ethereum, Solana, Base, Arbitrum and Polygon. Each version lives on its own network: USDC on Solana is a Solana token, USDC on Ethereum an ERC-20 token. Moving between them requires an exchange or a bridge, such as Circle's Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol.

Why payments and presales use USDC

  • Stable pricing — a presale stage priced in USDC means the same thing tomorrow.
  • Fast settlement — on networks like Solana, transfers confirm in seconds.
  • Wide availability — most large exchanges list USDC and support withdrawals to several networks.
  • Transparency — every transfer is visible on the blockchain.

Risks to understand

  • Issuer and reserve risk — the value depends on the reserves and on Circle.
  • Freeze risk — the issuer can freeze USDC at specific addresses, for example under legal orders.
  • Network risk — sending to the wrong network or a fake token can mean loss.
  • Regulation — rules for stablecoins differ by country and are still evolving.

USDC in the DPC presale

The DPC presale prices each stage in USDC and accepts USDC on Solana through the dashboard. DPC Chain planning also includes a USDC.e bridge, explained with its risks on the DEX page. For the payment flow itself, see the USDC presale page.

Frequently asked questions

Who issues USDC?

USDC is issued by Circle. It is intended to be redeemable one-to-one for US dollars, backed by cash and short-term US government securities.

Is USDC the same on every blockchain?

Each blockchain has its own version of USDC. They represent the same dollar value, but you cannot send USDC from one network to another without an exchange or bridge.

What is USDC.e?

USDC.e usually refers to bridged USDC: a token on one network backed by native USDC locked in a bridge on another. It carries the additional risk of that bridge.

Can USDC lose its peg?

It is designed to stay at one dollar, but the price can deviate briefly under stress, as happened in March 2023. Its value depends on the issuer's reserves.
